#56: finding the right people
👋 Welcome to the 56th issue of Out of Curiosity, a weekly newsletter promoting ideas to help get 1% better everyday.
My name is Reza, and every week, I go through nearly 100 pieces of content (from books and podcasts to newsletters and tweets), and bring you the best in this newsletter.
🙋♂️ A very warm welcome to the 150+ new subscribers who joined since last week. Thank you for tagging along!
I'd love it if you replied to this email and let me know how you stumbled upon this newsletter, and what you liked/disliked about this first one.
Work that matters takes just as much time, energy and intelligence as work that doesn't. Keep that in mind...

🦋 Four great decisions per year
None of the major decisions that have shaped my life were lengthy deliberations. They were each slowly building momentum for months or years, and then the decision was suddenly obvious. A certain amount of energy had built up behind it in my subconscious until one day, the dam burst, and the choice was clear.
🗓 2023 intentions
Be open to love.
More speaking up, setting boundaries, lovingly.
Pay attention to when I am happy. Repeat those moments and dial them up to 11!
Keep building things that make the world better in 100 years.
When my body contracts and my heart wants to close, breathe, stay open, lean in with curiosity.
Seek out rooms filled with gentle strangers.
I am exactly where I need to be.
Clarity is your friend. Interpret mixed signals as a no.
Love, joy and peace are deep and pure states of being. (Notice them!)
📚 How to live
When you commit to one outcome, you’re united and sharply focused.
When you sacrifice your alternate selves, your remaining self has amazing power.
Ignore other aspects of your life. Let go of every unnecessary obligation. Each one seems small, but together, they’ll drain your soul.
Focus your attention on the few things you’re committed to, and nothing else.
😌 Finding the right people
Don’t surround yourself with “smarter” people. The trick is to surround yourself with people who are free in ways you’re not.
To find the right people: start small. Find one right person first.
It can be in person, it can be online. Some places are harder than others. But there’s always at least one person who can exemplify freedom for you. There will be at least one person who sees you. You do have to look for them. Engage with content you enjoy, things that resonate. Reach out to people you find interesting. The worst thing that can happen is nothing changes. That’s a pretty asymmetrical bet.
💻 12 career lessons
Plan and make decisions over a long horizon.
Even the best jobs are only good seventy percent of the time.
Compete against yourself rather than with others.
Plan your career as if you were a company of one.
Who you work for is critical so choose your boss well.
Build your Brand.
Build a portfolio career and start giving back aggressively.
✨ One last thing…
👋 Until next week,
